BASIS SoftExpo-2011 in retrospect
05 Feb 2011
SoftExpo-2011, the country’s largest software and ITES exposition, successfully ended on February 5 at the capital’s picturesque Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) with an announcement for next year’s expo at the same venue during February 23-27.

BASIS President Mahboob Zaman pronounced the new schedule amid cheers from the visiting holiday crowds on the final evening as this year’s five-day extravaganza concluded on a high note.

With the theme ‘Digital Bangladesh in Action’, SoftExpo-2011 was formally inaugurated by Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith as Chief Guest on Feb 01.

As the country’s apex ICT trade body, BASIS (Bangladesh Association of Software & Information Services) organised the annual software exhibition this year for the ninth time.

A total of 110 local IT companies showcased their latest products, services and emerging technologies during the carnival alongside 10 renowned foreign companies from Denmark and Netherlands – paving the way for the globally-renowned ICT companies to be aware further about the local market, make arrangements for outsourcing opportunities here and help inflow of foreign investment in the country’s booming digital economy.

A good number of foreigners and foreign companies visited the fair and participated in ‘business match-making’ sessions with the local ICT entrepreneurs.

Around 50,000 people reportedly visited the expo that was organized this year for the first time in seven zones – Business Software zone, e-Commerce zone, e-Governance zone, Communication zone, Mobile Application zone, Multimedia & Animation zone and Outsourcing zone.

The gala ICT event featured in different kinds of exhibitors including the software and ITES companies, e-Governance solution providers, mobile content and application developers, communication solution providers, e-commerce portals, ICT training institutes and outsourcing companies.

This fair remained open from 10:00am to 8:00pm everyday. Entry fee was Tk 30 for general visitors while students having ID cards enjoyed free entrance. www.comjagat.com was responsible for webcasting.

Ministry of Science & ICT and Access to Information (A2i) Program under PM’s Office (PMO) were co-organisers of SoftExpo-2011. Grameenphone IT was chosen as the Platinum Sponsor while Reve Systems was the Gold Sponsor. BRAC Bank, Microsoft and ICT Business Promotion Council under the Commerce Ministry were the proud co-sponsors of the country’s biggest software & ITES show.

In fine, SoftExpo-2011 outshined all its previous arrangements in terms of size, organisation, participation and overall management. Proceedings of the expo were also marked by more than 20 in-depth seminars on various important contemporary ICT issues, programmers’ talent hunt contest, a unique ‘IT Job Fair’, gathering of a huge number of student & business visitors and a host of other activities.
