ICT should have been recognized as an Industrial Sector: Industry Minister

The ICT sector is growing day by day and the present government is giving emphasize on it as a developing sector. So, now it is time to recognize ICT sector as an industry. BASIS can play a big role in this perspective. The Industry ministry is committed to provide all possible supports if there comes any recommendation to recognize ICT sector as and industry.

Industry Minister Alhaz Amir Hossain Amu, MP said this while he was delivering his speech as the chief guest in the launching program of “Software & IT Service Catalog-2014” arranged by Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services. The program was held at the “Westin Dhaka”. BASIS President Mr. Shameem Ahsan Chaired the program where the President of FBCCI Kazi Akram Uddin Ahmed, DCCI President Mohammad Shahjahan Khan were also present as special guests. Mr. Sami Ahmed, Executive Director of BASIS gave a presentation describing the different aspects if the Software & IT Services Catalog and BASIS Secretary General Mr. Uttam Kumar Paul delivered the welcome speech.

The Industry Minister added that the present government is giving priority on ICT sector to build “Digital Bangladesh” for last 5-6 years. Government is developing ICT sector to ensure different common services. The IT catalog, containing information of almost hundreds of companies and their services, will give a detailed picture of the development of ICT sector of Bangladesh. The investors (both local & foreign) will be able to get the necessary information from this catalog. So, this catalog will play a positive role in the development of the ICT sector of Bangladesh.

BASIS President Mr. Shameem Ahsan mentioned that, to fulfill the government’s target of “Digital Bangladesh” BASIS has taken a 5 years plan of “One Bangladesh”. The target of this vision is to earn USD 1 billion export revenue from ICT sector. By this time the local market will reach USD 3 billion. As a result of this, ICT sector will contribute 1% of the total GDP. To fulfill the vision of creating 1 million IT professional within 2018, BITM is providing lots of IT trainings. BASIS is working to fulfill these visions in association with different international organizations including World Bank & ADB. Moreover, we are working relentlessly with the help of mobile phone & internet providers to increase 10 million internet subscribers. To fulfill this target BASIS is working in association with the ministry of communication & information technology, Authority of Bangladesh High Park, World Bank & Asian Development bank.

BASIS President added that BASIS is arranging a numbers of programs abroad to create a good impression of Bangladesh. BASIS is continuously arranging symposiums & seminars in North America and Europe which are the major export destinations in ICT sector of Bangladesh. Moreover BASIS is also participating in different IT fairs abroad with the help of Bangladesh Export Promotion Bureau to reveal the capability of Bangladesh regarding ICT sector. At the same time BASIS has also plan to arrange road show in all the continents of the world. There are also instructions from the government to the foreign missions to work more to enhance the capability of software & IT sector of Bangladesh.

The catalogue contains information of about hundreds frontier IT firms and their services that includes accounting and financial software, banking application, capital market solution, CRM, e-commerce and portal, education institute management application, enterprise content management, e-learning,  ERP & e-governance solution, hospital management system and many more. So, everybody will be able to get the information of the best organizations & their services. BASIS will distribute this catalog free of cost to the member companies of BASIS, FBCCI and DCCI as well. Besides, the digital version of the catalog can be downloaded from the official website of BASIS. The interested persons can also be able to collect the catalog anytime from BASIS office.
