Japan IT investors are very keen to invest in Bangladesh IT sector

On Friday, 15 November 2013, a major IT promotion event titled "Bangladesh NEXT, your next IT destination" took place in Tokyo Sheraton Miyako Hotel. The event was organized by the Embassy of Bangladesh and supported by the Tokyo Chamber and Commerce & Industry (TCCI) and a large number of Japan based Bangladeshi IT Professionals. It was attended by more than 100 Japanese IT firms and entities and representatives of various Japanese IT Associations who are members of TCCI and a large number of Tokyo Based IT Professionals of Bangladeshi origin. In his welcome remarks Ambassador Masud Bin Momen drew the attention of the large number of IT related professionals to the tremendous potential of the IT sector and the government's determination to transform Bangladesh into a digital middle income country by 2021.


The main speaker on the occasion was the President of BASIS Mr. Shameem Ahsan. In his presentation he highlighted the opportunities presently available in Bangladesh for IT related business. He told the audience that Bangladesh would like to aim for Software and IT enabled services exports worth $ 1 billion within the next 5 years, out of which US $ 200 million will come from Japan IT market. He also urged Japanese IT entrepreneurs to invest potential IT sector of Bangladesh. Mr. Shameem Ahsan's presentation was complimented by Mr. Rejwanur Kabir of JTS, an IT Professional who highlighted the role of IT Professionals working in Japan in promoting IT business with Bangladesh.


The main presentation was followed by four more presentations by Mr. Norio Murakami, former President of Google Japan Inc., Mr. Sunichi Nakamura of BNI, Mr. Nobuhiro Hayashi of BJIT, Mr. Toru Okazaki, MD of BBP Advisory Ltd. who highlighted various aspects of doing business in Bangladesh. Mr. Murakami told that Japan IT industry has reached a plateau and they must expand overseas business and Bangladesh could gain from this. The presentations were followed by a panel discussion and Q&A where distinguished Bangladeshi IT Professionals participated. Professor Ashir Ahmed of Kyushu University acted as the moderator while Dr. M. Mejbah Uddin, Dr. Mohammad Muquit of Mathworks and Mr. Rony Saidul Parvez, KDDI, responded to important queries from the audience. Senior officials

from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, JICA, JETRO and METI also attended. Ms. Nilufa Yasmin of Japanese Gaming Giant GREE conducted the whole event while Mr. Kazi Enamul Haque, another IT Professional delivered the vote of thanks. Former BASIS President Mr. Mahboob Zaman of Data Soft was also in attendance. All the participants later joined the refreshment segment for inter-action and exchange of views.


Given the large attendance and the enthusiasm of the audience it may be concluded that the successful event was the result of close cooperation between the Embassy and the expatriate experts. The Embassy would like to continue such collaborative ventures in the future specially by arranging another B2B event as a follow-up. The audience also showed their keen interest to invest in the IT sector of Bangladesh.
