1 Percent of country's GDP will come from Software & IT Service within next 5 years

In the next 5 years, 1 percent of the country's total GDP will come from the software and IT services sector. At the same time the export sector growth will stand at 1 billion US dollars and the country's software and IT professionals will become 1.5 lac. BASIS President stated this on the closing ceremony of Bangladesh Information Technology Management Program (BITMAP-II) project at a Hotel recently. HE Hanne Fugl Eskjaer, Ambassador of Embassy of Denmark in Bangladesh was present in this program as the chief guest. BASIS President Shameem Ahsan presided over the program. An overview of the BitMAP and BITMAP-II projects covering its background, objectives, activities and achievements were presented by BASIS Senior Vice President Syed Almas Kabir. BASIS Secretary General Russell T Ahmed gave the vote of thanks and BASIS Secretary Hashim Ahmed moderated the program.

In her speech, the chief guest expressed her deep satisfaction for the overall outcomes from BITMAP-II project. She also stated that, dynamic and highly ambitious youth of this country is playing a significant role in developing ICT sector of Bangladesh. She also hoped that, the growth of ICT sector of Bangladesh will be increasing remarkably and more global recognitions will be achieved like Gartner’s ranking as one of the top 30 IT outsourcing countries.  She also mentioned some of the names of BASIS member companies who has been successfully doing IT business with Denmark. Like BITMAP-II project, the Denmark Embassy will provide full support and cooperation in future for any ICT industry development initiative.

BASIS President Shameem Ahsan in his speech mentioned that, the country's ICT export exceeded 100 million US dollars in the last fiscal year and BASIS is now working with 1 billion US dollars. He also thanked Embassy of Denmark for their support and also requested other foreign embassies in Dhaka towards the development Bangladesh ICT industry.

It may be mentioned here that, the first phase of BITMAP project was implemented by Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) with the support of the Embassy of Denmark in Dhaka during in 2007-08. Under this project, training, seminars and workshops on expanding IT business in Europe were organized for a good number of high officials from BASIS member companies. Later in the period of 2010-12, the second phase of this project was implemented which includes strengthening of BASIS secretariat, ensuring quality service for BASIS member companies, strengthening BASIS financially, increasing women IT entrepreneurs etc. Danish Federation of Small & Medium Enterprises (DFSME) provided the training and technical assistance to implement these activities as consultant.
