The day-long “Digital Investment Summit 2015” took place on May 7, 2015. This event marked a strong commitment from different entities to invest and to promote investment in the ICT sector and create a drive for digital solutions through mobile technology. This event was jointly organized by ICT Division, BASIS, Telenor Group and Accenture Bangladesh at the Raddisson Blu Water Garden Hotel, Dhaka. The investment summit featured participation from key local and international policymakers, representatives from the government and trade bodies, investors and industry leaders.
Mr. Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed, ICT Affairs Adviser to the Honorable Prime Minister, was the Chief Guest of the summit. He expressed that the government is putting efforts to allow foreign mutual funds in Bangladesh’s capital market to step up direct foreign investment. He also said that several mutual funds are at play in the market at the moment but none of them deals with foreign funds and he himself is engaged in consultation with the Security and Exchange Commission.
The Special Guest of the event, the ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak, MP presented a statistical analysis of the IT sector of Bangladesh and said that around 7 lakh people depend on the IT sector to earn their living. Within the next 10 years, all the IT and Software Parks will be established in the country.
BASIS President Mr. Shameem Ahsan delivered his speech by talking about the current scenario of Bangladesh along with the future prospects. He also focused on the current IT market scenario of Bangladesh, scopes of collaboration and the targets which can be achieved through proper nurturing and investment on this sector. Through an inspiring speech, he urged everyone to come forward for the development of the sector. He also moderated a Panel Discussion entitled: "Key Priorities to Foster Investment and Continued Digitalization for All in Bangladesh" which featured discussant who are very prominent in the IT sector. Mr. Sajeeb Ahmed Wazed, ICT Affairs Adviser to the Honorable Prime Minister, Mr. Jon Fredrik Baksaas, President & CEO, Telenor Group; Mr. Zou Zhilei, President, Carrier Network, Huawei; Giuseppe Jannelli, Senior Managing Director–Asia Pacific Communications, Media & Technology, Accenture, Dr. M. Masrur Reaz, Program Manager in the Trade & Competitiveness Global Practice of the World Bank Group (WBG) were present at the Panel Discussion.
The Vice President of BASIS Mr. Russell T Ahmed also moderated a Panel Discussion session titled as: "The Biggest Driver for ICT Industry Growth - Innovation, Investment, Policy Support?" This panel discussion also featured prominent people as discussants, where they talked about key features that are required for the growth of ICT in Bangladesh. Mr. Abrar A. Anwar, Chief Executive Officer of Standard Chartered Bangladesh, Sonia Bashir Kabir, County Manager, Microsoft Bangladesh, Syed Farhad Ahmed, Chairman, aamra technologies limited were also present on the panel discussion.
The Digital Investment Summit ended with a commitment to promote investment in the ICT sector.
