Bangladesh living dangerously

Bangladesh ranks number 1 in the world in local infections and ranks 9th most vulnerable country exposed to cyber threats through internet according to an analysis by Kaspersky Lab for quarter 1(Q1) of 2012.

Local infection means viruses and malware spreading through pen drives, CDs and other such means.

Kaspersky Lab, world's leading IT security company, at a press meet revealed the information on Wednesday.

Kaspersky Lab, with its exclusive distributor in Bangladesh and Bhutan, Officextracts jointly organised the press meet to share the findings on the cyber threats.

Bernie Bengler, director of Cloud Services of Kaspersky Lan-Asia Pacific region, Mahboob Zaman, president, BASIS, Tapan Sarker, Bankers CTO Forum and Prabeer Sarkar, CEO, Officextracts, addressed the meet.

In 2011, by user based analysis, Bangladesh was number 2 with 92.6% in local infections and Sudan was number 1 with 94.6%.

In Q1 of 2012, Bangladesh became number 1 by user based analysis with 96.75% in local infections and Sudan manages to come down to number 2 with 90.51%.

At the same time Bangladesh becomes the 9th most vulnerable country exposed to threats via the internet. Russia is on number 1.

The statistics were determined after continuous monitoring, research and analysis.

Prabeer Sarkar shared the information and data on local virus infections and cyber threats. During his presentation he also shared the global summary of 2011 and first quarter of 2012.

He said the data for the statistics was collected from the Kaspersky users. “When you scan your computer with Kaspersky, it scans all your files and it found that in Bangladesh 10 out of 10 computers are infected with virus,” Sarkar explained.

“There are 750,000 Kaspersky users in Bangladesh”, he said adding there are many more computer users who do not use Kaspersky.

He said even with Kaspersky's small user-base Bangladesh became number 1 to have local infections.

Sarkar also said we have to have safe environment to have Digital Bangladesh.

In 2011, on an average 70,000 new malicious threats were detected every day; at least one malware detected in every 14 downloads from the internet; one new malicious program appeared every 2 seconds on average, total of 2,367,130,584 viral incidents on user computers detected; 1,590,861 different malicious programs detected; there were 2,656,409,669 attempts to unlawful penetration to computers. It was double the numbers from 2010; on an average 80.26% spam in mail traffic were detected, of that 59.02% spam originated from Asia and Latin America. India is the number 1 spamming country in the world, the analysis said.

Browser based attacks increased from 580,371,937 to 946,393,693 in 2011 from 2010.

During June December 2011 Android OS based attacks grew 9 times. During October December 2011 Kaspersky Lab detected 5,444 malicious programs for Android OS based mobile devices.

More than 1 billion malicious objects were detected already which is 28% more than the last quarter of 2011. This is 61% higher than last quarter of 2011.

Even apple's Mac environment is not safer anymore. Over 7,000,000 computers worldwide were infected by flashback malware in March this year.

Sarkar said they shared the information not to scare people but to make them aware of computer and internet security.

Bernie Bengler informed that, to help channel partners support smaller firms in addressing the security implications of trends such as consumerisation, increased use of mobile devices and social media, cloud computing, and virtualisation, Kaspersky Lab has launched a new edition of Kaspersky Hosted Security, its cloud-based security solution for web and email.
