Jobseekers increasingly going online to hunt for placements

 

The submission of online job applications has gone up significantly in recent years as tech-savvy jobseekers find it more convenient and less-complicated than the traditional paper-based system.

The number of online job vacancies increased by more than 30 per cent last year, compared with the year before, as both employers and jobseekers are increasingly turning to the technology-driven version, interviews with applicants and employers reveal.

Each year more than 2.0 million youths enter nation's employment market, which can provide jobs for only 1.0 million, leaving the rest to the league of unemployed.

Md Reza Hasan, a student of Anthropology at Dhaka University, has embraced the online application system for the first time as he applied for the cadre post of Bangladesh Civil Service (BCS) exam this year, using the new system.

Talking to the FE, Mr Hasan said he came to know from past applicants at the university about the hazards and difficulties of submitting the BCS form.

"I've found the new system (online) easier than the paper version of the application," he said.

Mr Hasan said youths of his generation are familiar with technology, which is faster than the traditional system. "It also gives us an opportunity to check out the employers' reply in the shortest possible time."

According to Bdjobs.com, the country's leading jobsite, employment openings posted on its site jumped by nearly 33 per cent to 36,240 in 2011 as against 26,000 in 2010.

General Manager (Sales and Marketing) of this site Prokash Roy Chowdhury said the total submitted applications against these published jobs increased by 47 per cent to 5.1 million in 2011, which was 3.4 million in 2010.

Chief Executive Officer of Bdjobs.com Ltd Fahim Mashrur said: "The number of employers went up sharply as 11,000 companies--both national and multinational companies-used our site in 2011, which is nearly 37 per cent more than that of the previous year".

Mr Mashrur said the growth of the applications is a sign that the country is going to be a digital one.

"Job management system of the country needs to be further updated and made online in line with the global job management practices," he said.

Chakri.bd.com, another leading jobsite in the country, said it posted 9,520 vacancies in 2011 against 7,200 in 2010.

Chief Software Engineer of the job site Mr Kyser Mamun Chowdhury said they have 1,050 client organisations now, from 720 in 2010.

Chief Executive Officer of Chakri.bd.com Mr Ameek Intesar Ahmed said the country's job management practices have been changing.

"Online applications will increase gradually, because we will try to cope with the global job management practices," he said.

Other job websites Jobs A1, Grameenjobs.com, ProthomaloJobs.com, Jobsbd.com, Cyberjobs.com, also have achieved a notable growth in recent times.

Officials of jobsites said the number of employers also increased significantly during the period.

Bangladesh has now around 50 online jobsites, which act as bridges between the potential employees and the employers.
