BASIS Delegation meets Finance Minister ahead of National Budget

A BASIS delegation led by its President Mahboob Zaman met Honorable Finance Minister Mr. M A Muhit on May 29, 2011, ahead of the announcement of National Budget for 2011-12. BASIS delegation put forward a number of demands for the development of software and ITES industry in the country and requested the Finance Minister to incorporate the proposals in the upcoming budget announcement.

The major budgetary proposals of BASIS includes-

  • Establishment of ICT Industry Development Fund of Tk. 700 crore as per the National ICT Policy 2009.
  • Special Allocation of Tk. 50 crore for crash training program to train 10,000 IT professionals in next 2 years.
  • Special Allocation of Tk. 50 crore for building a number of STPs

BASIS also proposed the following Tax/VAT demands to the honorable Finance Minister.

  • Exemption of Corporate Income Tax from Software and ITES business till 2018 (current exemption will expire from 2011).
  • Separate Service Code for VAT for Software and ITES and exemption of VAT from this service.
  • Withdrawal of 15% VAT from Internet Service

Finance Minister gave patience hearing to the BASIS proposal. He also assured BASIS leaders about his support in this regard.

BASIS delegation also included Mr. Fahim Mashroor, Senior Vice President, Mr. Almas Kabir Treasurer, Mr. Shameem Ahsan, Chairman Standing Committee of International Market Development and Mr. Tansif Danesh, Secretary BASIS.
