BASIS, in collaboration with BASIS eCommerce Alliance, organized a roundtable on September 3, 2016 at the BASIS Auditorium on preparing proper guidelines for the country’s growing ecommerce industry, net neutrality, and fair competition.
Telecom operators in the country run numerous services starting from music streaming to full-fledged content platform to online ticketing platform to online video streaming services. Majority of these services take undue advantage from the owner operators which is a direct violation of the idea of net neutrality. However, due to lack of guidelines and attention from the authority, this matter never got proper treatment.
The seminar aimed to look at and discuss the current state of ecommerce, importance of net neutrality in order to prevent unfair competition and also policy directives for the development of the growing sector.
BASIS Senior Vice President Russell T Ahmed, Vice President M Rashidul Hasan, Director Uttam Kumar Paul and Director Mustafizur Rahaman Sohel were present at the roundtable presided by BASIS President Mustafa Jabbar. Syeda Kamrun Ahmed, Chairman of BASIS Standing Committee on Digital Commerce; Fahim Mashroor, Former BASIS President and Managing Director of Ajkerdeal; Barrister in law, ABM Hamidul Mishbah; Syed Mohammad Kamal, Country Director, Mastercard Bangladesh; Kamal Qadir, CEO, bKash; Ali Kamran Al Zahid, Co-director of Bangladesh Bank and stakeholder of IT sector, media representatives and concerned officials from Government were present at the roundtable.
