A workshop titled Copyright Workshop: Protect Your Software Product/App/Game/Creative Assets was organized by Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) and Copyright Office to discuss the needful to protect the property rights in Software and IT sector. The workshop was held on Saturday at the BASIS Auditorium, Dhaka.
BASIS President Shameem Ahsan spoke as the Chief Guest while IT specialist Mustafa Jabbar presided over the workshop. The issue was discussed in depth by Zohra Begum, Copyright Deputy Register, Copyright Office and Sunny Md. Ashraf Khan, Director, BASIS as well.
Shameem Ahsan said, proper enforcement of laws regarding intellectual property and patents must be ensured for Software products and services. Due to the absence of vigorous enforcement of the laws, counterfeiters have been able to copy the source codes of new software products and services and develop similar ones. The widespread extent of the problem is causing financial damages to the individuals and organizations. Therefore intellectual property law enforcement and building awareness about the same is necessary for the overall IT sector development.
Mustafa Jabbar said, absence of proper enforcement of copyright and IP laws for the Software and IT industry of the country has become an increasing concern for the businesses. We have been voicing it to the government and concerned bodies for a long time. I feel this issue needs to be given due importance. I thank BASIS for their initiatives to build awareness. Expectantly soon we will be able to see outcomes.
The workshop jointly arranged by BASIS and Copyright Office pointed out the general idea, scopes, regulations, importance and rules or requirements of different copyright issues. Representatives from over 100 BASIS member companies participated at the workshop.
