Korea-Bangladesh ICT Seminar held in Dhaka

Korea holds a lot of potentials for the Bangladeshi IT industry in terms of global expansion. Few Korean companies have already invested in Bangladesh. In 2016, top IT companies of Korea are likely to invest in the country.  In this regard, an investment seminar titled “Strengthening Partnership through ICT” was organized to discuss the capacities of Bangladeshi IT companies, future plans among many other things. BASIS, ICT Division and Korean Embassy jointly organized the seminar.
 
Participatory Bangladeshi companies got the opportunity to meet many Korean companies and discussed the prospects of future partnership during the seminar held on Sunday.
 
Zunaid Ahmed Palak, State Minister, Ministry of Post, Telecommunications & Information Technology was present at the inauguration of the event as the chief guest. BASIS President an FBCCI Director Shameem Ahsan was the special guest of the event. Ahn Seong-doo, Korean Ambassador in Bangladesh presided over the ceremony. Among others Rafiqul Islam Rowly, Past President of BASIS, A Tauhid,  Past President of BASIS, Uttam Kumar Paul, Secretary General of BASIS, Mostafizur Rahman Sohel, Joint Secretary General of BASIS, Ashraf Abir, Director of BASIS, Sami Ahmed, Executive Director of BASIS and previous executive council members of BASIS were present at the seminar.
 
Chief Guest of the Seminar, Zunaid Ahmed Palak, State Minister, Ministry of Post, Telecommunications & Information Technology said, Bangla Gov Net is a crucial project in the establishment of eGovernance in Bangladesh. Korea has been working towards the implementation of the project. Bangladesh-Korea Institute of IT has trained over 7000 IT professionals in the country. Samsung has opened its R&D Center in Bangladesh. This has opened job opportunity for over 600 Bangladeshi engineers. Korean top companies have contributions in other sectors too. He invited the Korean companies to invest and collaborate in Kaliakoir Hi-tech Park and other Hi-tech parks to be built in various locations in the country. 
 
Special guest, BASIS President Shameem Ahsan said, Korea is on the top among the global ICT industries. Bangladesh has a sizeable pool of talented app developers who are very capable of developing world-class games. Besides, Bangladesh is one of the major markets for Korean electronic products. Strategic partnership between the two countries will help Korea sustaining their growth and cost effectiveness; and becoming more globally competitive. He also mentioned notable achievement and success of Bangladeshi IT Companies in the global arena.
 
Ahn Seong-doo, Korean Ambassador in Bangladesh said, in last few years Korea has been playing a fundamental role in the development of IT sector of Bangladesh. Korean companies have worked in projects including Bangla Gov Net, different projects of the ministries and networking. Korea will continue to work with Bangladesh for the development of IT industry. 
 
Korea was commended for securing the first place in Global ICT Development Index at the event.  Russell T Ahmed, Senior Vice President of BASIS presented the insights of Bangladeshi IT industry. 
 
After the inauguration, a panel discussion was held with the participation of Bangladeshi companies.  Russell T Ahmed, Senior Vice President of BASIS moderated the discussion. Mahbub Zaman, CEO, Data Soft, Fahim Mashroor, CEO, Bdjobs, SM Ashraful Islam. Executive Director, Bangladesh Computer Council, Sonia Bashir, Country Manager, Microsoft Bangladesh, Ashraf Abir, CEO, MCC Ltd. and Fadia Khaleda Khan, Director, Summit Group joined the seminar.
 
Later 6 companies from Korea and World Bank showed presentations regarding their competencies and possible support. NIA consultant Isaac Kim discussed Korea’s eGovernment journey and present trends of Korean Game industry. Sohee Shin, Vice President of KT talked over the past, present and future of KT in Bangladesh. Sardar Muhammad Monzurur Rahman of Samsung R&D discussed a case study for investment in Bangladesh. Hah Joonsic, Vice President, Asia Sales and Marketing Division of SK C&C discussed different aspects of eGovernment in Korea and Bangladesh. Youngbeom Kim, Director, Daeyeong Ubitec talked over wireless broadband network in Bangladesh. Jinhwan Shin of Deloitte Korea and Christopher T Pablo, Senior Urban Specialist of World Bank talked about development of national cyber security and possible support in making Dhaka smart city respectively. Sami Ahmed, Director of BASIS moderated the sessions.
