Bangladesh Bank Governor inaugurates e-commerce week 2013

Inauguration ceremony of “e-commerce Week” jointly organized by Bangladesh Bank and Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) with support of ICT Business Promotion Council took place in The Westin Hotel, Dhaka on 5 January, 2013. Governor of Bangladesh Bank, Dr. Atiur Rahman graced the occasion as the chief guest and inaugurated this week long initiative. This week is organized to encourage people to shop online and businessmen into e-commerce. Theme of this week is “Shop Online: Anything. Anytime". Mr. Dasgupta Ashim Kumar, Executive Director, Bangladesh Bank was present as the special guest. Mr. AKM Fahim Mashroor gave the welcome speech.

Mr. Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, BRAC Bank; Mr. Abul Kashem Md. Shirin, Deputy Managing Director, DBBL and Mr. Sayeeful Islam, Managing Director, SSLCOMMERZ gave their speech as the partners of the week. Mr. Shameem Ahsan, convener of the week and SVP, BASIS felicitated in the program.

Governor of Bangladesh Bank said in his speech that Bangladesh Bank has started National Payment Switch (NPS). He asked all commercial banks to join the National Payment Switch  network by the end of January to facilitate quick transactions and e-commerce. Currently, 4.6 million people have debit or credit cards and there are 3 million mobile bank accounts across the country, which help quick and safe banking transactions, he added. He also expressed his gratitude towards BASIS for taking initiative to popularize e-commerce and extended Bangladesh Banks support in this regard.

People of the country are trying to sell their products through the internet, but they are facing problems in transaction, said Abul Kashem Md Shirin, deputy managing director of Dutch-Bangla Bank Ltd.

The full utilisation of e-commerce will also help quick revenue collection for the government, said Ashim Kumar Dasgupta, an executive director of Bangladesh Bank.

Sayeeful Islam, Managing Director, SSLCOMMERZ, Syed Mahbubur Rahman, Managing Director of BRAC Bank, and AKM Fahim Mashroor, president of BASIS, also spoke.

This e-commerce week will start on 5th January and will end on 11th January. During this week 4 roundtable discussions, two seminars, one technical session and special awareness program in Dhaka University will take place. Also a special promotional campaign will go on in Bashundhara Shopping Mall on 11 & 12 January and a concert in Rabindra Sarobor.

bKash, Payza, Oscom, Shurjomukhi, Akhoni.com, Rokomari.com, Ajkerdeal.com, Amar Desh Amar Gram are the associate partners of the week with support of ICT Business Promotion Council. Also, 4 e-commerce related tech companies are participating in this week.
